Headaches

For headaches that start in the neck and shoulders.

Not all headaches are the same, and some are closely associated with the muscles and joints of the neck. Tension-type and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches often connect to posture, muscle tension, and restricted movement in the cervical spine. For these, addressing the neck mechanics may help reduce how often and how intensely they occur. Dr. Rodis assesses whether your headaches appear to have a musculoskeletal component that chiropractic care may address.

Common signs and symptoms

  • A dull, aching band-like pressure around the head
  • Pain that starts at the base of the skull or neck
  • Tightness across the shoulders and upper back
  • Headaches associated with long periods at a desk or screen
  • Reduced neck mobility alongside the headache

How we approach it

After assessing your neck and posture, care may combine chiropractic adjustment with soft tissue work to reduce muscle tension and improve mobility. Dr. Rodis will discuss whether your headaches appear related to neck mechanics and whether care is appropriate.

When to seek care

Consider an evaluation for recurring tension-type headaches that affect your daily life. Seek prompt medical attention for a sudden severe headache, a headache after a head injury, or headaches accompanied by vision changes, confusion, fever, weakness, or difficulty speaking, as these require urgent evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which headaches can chiropractic care help with?
Chiropractic care is most associated with tension-type and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches. It is not a treatment for every kind of headache, so Dr. Rodis assesses whether yours appear to have a musculoskeletal component.
When should I see a doctor instead?
Any sudden, severe, or unusual headache, or one following a head injury or accompanied by neurological symptoms, warrants prompt medical evaluation rather than routine care.
